Barry passed away on January 3, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at the Kirkland & District Hospital. Barry was born on March 21, 1939, in Sault Ste. Marie to the late James and Matilda (Leroux) Penfold. Barry was self-employed for well over 30 years in the hotel industry. He owned and operated The Federal Tavern and The Franklin and some may remember his days as an Insurance Adjuster owning Algoma Adjusters. He was very active in the Lions Club and the Canadian Travellers Association. Barry enjoyed curling, playing golf, fishing, hunting and being around family.
Dear husband of 44 years to Carol Ann (née Hartley) Penfold; loving and devoted father to Jodi, Allyson (Blaine Booth), Timothy (Lisa Chartrand), Alison (Les Goebel); much loved grandfather to Pamela, Joshua, Noel, Kelsie, Brandon, Jordyn, Bryanna, Jesse, Joshua and great-grandfather to Grayson. Dearest brother to Jim (Doreen) Penfold and Pauline (Gary) Kovacevich; brother-in-law to Doug (Doreen) Hartley and Sharon (late Ron Hartley). Barry was a special godfather to Kathryn, Olmstead and Kerri Gorman. Predeceased by his siblings Clayton, Wallace, Lloyd, Gerald and Joyce Murray.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration will be held at The Kenogami Bridge Inn on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Donations in Barry’s memory may be mailed to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (20 Elginton Avenue West, 16th floor, Toronto, ON M4R 1K8) or to the Timiskaming Hospice Palliative Care (c/o Kirkland & District Hospital, 145 Government Road East, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4).
