SAYERS, William Thomas

(December 21, 1948 – February 13, 2017) - On Monday morning, promptly at 6:00 am, February 13, 2017, surrounded by loved ones, Waabishkaa Binesi, William “Bill” Thomas Sayers of Garden River First Nation, journeyed into the Spirit World. He was 68 years young.  A strong, loving, humble, funny, caring, and gentle Dad, he is survived by his four beautiful girls, who he was so proud of, Mackenzie, Taylor (Bear), Naomi, and Alicia (Kareem), wife Sharon, and special friend, Darla Mary, siblings Judy (George), and Rosiland. He had three grandchildren who were the loves of his life, Lain – “chum”, Danielle “the boss”, and Bryce. Uncle Bill also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, who remember his quiet but present ways. Bill is predeceased by his parents, Mary Ann Sayers and Edward Syrette, and “Grandma” Mary Virta and his sisters Shirley and Marilyn.  Bill, known by friends and family as Mr. Bill and Billy Boy, lived a private and beautiful life. He led a life that was rooted in the traditional Ojibwe ways, and could be seen dancing at many pow wows and participating in ceremonies throughout Turtle Island.  He had a great passion for the outdoors and always put his family, especially his daughters first.  He taught them many aspects of life, including the traditional culture and teachings; the importance of family; hard work; patience; and appreciation for the "bush" - hunting, fishing. And to always finish what you start.  He was a man who was always on time and did everything with precision.  His daughters will miss his silly and stern ways and his grandchildren will miss his bright spirit.  Bill “Waabishkaa Binesi” will begin resting at the Garden River Community Center beginning, Thursday, February 16, at 4 pm where friends and family can gather to celebrate his life.  Traditional ceremonies will be held nightly. The final ceremony will begin at 10 am to send him home and the final song for Bill “Waabishkaa Binesi” Sayers will be sung on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at 12 pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Anishnawbe Health Foundation (849991914RR0001) in Toronto, Ontario. Arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre 705-759-2522. Expressions of sympathy may be offered at www.arthurfuneralhome.com.
