It is with devastated hearts that we announce the sudden accidental death in Guelph of our gentle giant Joe on March 7, 2020 at the age of 36. The current crisis suddenly becomes horribly real and we join the club that no one wants to be part of.

Joe leaves behind his children Ella and Ryan, parents Mary and Dan, brother Rob and sister-in-law Christina, nieces Lili (Liam), Ava and Emme, and nephews Malcolm and the late Brennan. Grandson to the late Ann & Art Slater and the late Bob & Georgina Speers. Beloved nephew and cousin to many.

Because Joe chose to be an organ donor, his enormous gentle heart is beating on and his kidneys have allowed two other persons a chance for a longer future. Just knowing that some good came from his tragic death has helped his loved ones to cope.

Staff at the Guelph General Hospital ICU were so kind and caring toward all of us for the week that we were there. Thank you to Ann for the loaned guitar and her much-needed support, Pastor Kevin Coghill of Royal City Mission for joining in the songs and leading our service that was, like Joe, unique. We were then blessed with the “walk of honour” that escorted Joe to the operating room and say our final goodbye.

In tribute to Joe please do what you can to help someone who is struggling. Find the good in yourself and others. Donations in his memory can be made to Lakeside Hope House, Guelph Drop In Center or Royal City Mission or whichever charity you choose.

Thank you to all who have helped both Joe and our family with kindness and compassion, patience and understanding.
