The family of Sophia Anne "Sue" Stanghetta announces her peaceful passing on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025.
Sue was born on October 2, 1929 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to Bartyk (William) and Josephine (nee Dzama) Martynuck. The fourth of six children, Sue grew up in the “West End” where her parents owned a General Store. She graduated with Honours in 1946 from Sault Ste. Marie Technical High School with a diploma as a Commercial Secretary and worked for Algoma Steel as a payroll clerk until 1954.
On May 5, 1954, Sue married the love of her life Emilio (Mel) Stanghetta. Throughout their almost 71 years of married life, they joyfully welcomed five children, raising them with a foundation of faith, family, kindness, and love. From their family of seven, they grew to a thriving family of 42.
She loved to sing and play piano, pick blueberries and mushrooms, garden, make puzzles, play cards, and solve word searches. She was a strong advocate for the environment long before it became widely popular – reusing and recycling always. As a Mom, she loved cooking with her family, sharing her Polish-Ukrainian heritage and making the best pierogi, cabbage rolls, and dill pickles. Sue and Mel loved dancing together – the smoothest jitterbug/swing dancers ever! She had an endearing and lighthearted sense of humour which delighted those who were lucky enough to experience it.
As the family matriarch, she loved unconditionally, listened patiently, protected fiercely, and cared deeply.
Sue is survived by her husband Mel, children Richard (Sherry), Paula (Terry), Mel (Lori), Susan (John), Carla (Donald). She will be missed by her 12 grandchildren (who knew her as Baba) and 11 great-grandchildren (who called her Big Baba). Sue was Auntie or “Cha-Cha” to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her parents William and Josephine Martynuck, siblings Marie (late Mike) Stanghetta, Anne (late Gord) Stone, John (Norma) Martynuck, Stan (late Aldene) Martynuck, Bill (Carol) Martynuck, Jim (Doreen) Maciuk, and precious grandson David McLean. Sister-in-law to the late Adalgesa, (late Atilio) Signoretti, late Olga (late Danny) Paris, late Hugo (late Rena) Stanghetta, late Naldo (late Freda) Stanghetti, late Remo (late Edith), Stanghetta, late Mike (late Marie) Stanghetta, and late Elda Pianosi.
