March 16, 1948-November 14, 2023
Jim passed peacefully from this world with family at his side in the comforting surroundings of Erie Shores Hospice in Leamington, Ontario on November 14. Jim was born and raised on the Sutherland Century Farm in Mount Brydges, Ontario. He attended the one room Sutherland School and Sutherland United Church as a child. In the 60s and 70s he was deeply involved with the hippie movement and the formation of the New Democratic Party (NDP), and would host music jams and political gatherings at his farm, which he took over from his family in 1968. Jim had a deep and abiding love of Algoma, where he spent much time as a young adult and where he moved to with his young family in 1986. He loved camping, canoeing, picking blueberries and going for long walks in the woods. He was proud of the time he spent serving the community of Algoma during his time working as NDP MPP Bud Wildman’s constituency officer and volunteering for the Algoma Farmer’s Market in the nineties. He was a skilled farmer, gifted writer, piano player and songwriter, and as an English teacher was loved by his students. He graduated with a BA in French Literature from the University of Guelph. He was proud to have achieved his BA in English from Algoma University as a mature student and went on to obtain his MA in English from Lakehead University. He taught abroad for ten years in South Korea and China, where he met and married his second wife Lu Li, and they returned to Canada in 2007 where they eventually settled in Windsor. He passed on to his daughters his love of good books, old cheddar cheese, a good cup of tea (especially when cooked over a Coleman Stove in the bush), Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins and Bob Dylan. He is remembered by his loving wife Lu Li and her family, daughters Stephanie Sutherland (Peter Downey), Robin Sutherland (Fred Post), and grandchildren RJ Downey, Corbin Sutherland-Post and Rowan Sutherland-Post. He is fondly remembered by long-time friend and past partner Gillian Lloyd and friends and colleagues around the world. He joins his father James Sutherland, mother Margaret Sutherland, sister Joanne Brown, and granddaughter Summer Rose Sutherland-Post in the spirit world. Deep gratitude go to the staff and volunteers of Erie Shores Hospice, Dr. Kahn and the Windsor Cancer Center for providing such compassionate care through his brief battle with leukemia. If so desired, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Erie Shores Hospice (Click Here) or the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation (Click Here). In keeping with Jim's wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Cremation First (Windsor) 519-398-9188.
