Peacefully passed away at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH), surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at the age of 80. Beloved husband of Gladys. Cherished father of Joey Kirkwood (Colin) and Trisha Westman (Lawrence Foster). Proud grandfather of Maggie, Austin, Kai, Quin and Jett.

Originally from Princeton, Ontario, Wayne first discovered Sault Ste. Marie’s magic working for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Sea Lamprey Control program as a summer student. Fisheries hooked him and upon graduation from the University of Guelph, he moved to the Sault to pursue his dream career. The dazzle of sunlight across wide open water kept him entranced for 37 years of public service 'Lamprey Busting'.

Wayne’s loving family tree extended far and wide. No matter the branch, Wayne was the purveyor of adventure, great stories and fascinating items he unearthed during his travels. Wayne’s keen eye was as tuned to spot a merlin while canoeing as it was to spotting something ‘useful’ that had been orphaned roadside while cycling at top speed.

His industrious nature and imagination are reflected in countless efforts that Wayne happily lent his broad bandwidth of skills to. Wayne’s hotline was available for family, friends and the community 24hrs a day. Expeditions requiring chainsaws, Gore-tex and a survival kit were triaged first. Compensation in the form of a free donut or slice of pizza graciously accepted.

Wayne’s vitality mesmerized us into thinking his stamina was limitless. For over 80 years it was. He put his engine to incredible use, all the while ‘just trying to be a good guy.’ Thank-you Wayne for teaching us how to get out there, get things done and squeeze every last drop out of what life has to offer. Your legacy will endure in our hearts and memories.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life “Come & Go” in the Lower Lounge at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial donations to ARCH, the YNCU PeeWee Arena, Hiawatha Highlands or the Sault Cycling Club would be greatly appreciated by the family. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be offered at www.northwoodfuneral.com
