Hamilton police say a man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a four-month-old baby more than a year ago.

Police say emergency officials responded to a report of an infant in distress in the city's east end just before 6 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2023.

They say paramedics found a four-month-old girl unresponsive, and she was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the baby was being taken care of by her mother's boyfriend at the time, and after speaking with investigators he was released unconditionally.

They say investigators have since conducted numerous family interviews and executed several search warrants, and recently received an autopsy report that confirmed the baby did not die from natural causes.

Police say a 23-year-old Hamilton man has been charged with manslaughter and was scheduled to appear in court Friday.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 2, 2025.
