TORONTO — Toronto city councillors have voted to increase their salary by 24 per cent, or about $33,000.
A city report indicates the pay bump to $170,588 puts them roughly on par with what councillors made last year in Brampton, slightly less than those in Mississauga, and about $30,000 more than those in Hamilton.
Aside from inflationary increases, last night's vote marks the councillors' first pay adjustment since 2006.
Mayor Olivia Chow, whose $225,000 salary was unaffected, called the proposed hike too steep earlier this week.
The city manager's report, which recommended the pay bump, says it will cost the city just shy of $1 million this year.
It notes councillors had their constituencies and responsibilities expanded when the province reduced the council's size from 44 to 25 in 2018.
