Brinks driver and company charged in connection with fatal crash

A 57-year-old from Thessalon died at the scene last November in Bruce Mines

As a result of an investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police, the driver of a Brinks Canada Ltd. vehicle has been charged with careless driving causing death in connection with a four-vehicle crash on Highway 17 east of Bruce Mines last Nov. 26.

In addition, the company has also been charged, according to an OPP news release.

A 57-year-old from Thessalon died at the scene.

Michael Matthews, 64, from Prince Township was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

  • Careless driving cause death
  • Operate vehicle-fail to display inspection sticker or proof
  • Fail to maintain daily log
  • Fail to surrender completed daily inspection report

Brinks Canada Ltd. from Sudbury has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

  • Permit person to drive commercial motor vehicle not in accordance with regulations
  • Permit operation of vehicle-fail to display inspection sticker or proof
  • Fail to ensure daily inspection is conducted properly

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Provincial Offences in Sault Ste. Marie on March 19.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and both are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
