Charges laid in Hwy. 17 crash that killed seniors from the Sault and Wawa

A Sudbury resident is facing several charges in a January crash on Highway 17 west of North Bay that killed one person from Wawa and one person from the Sault.

Ontario Provincial Police were called to the two-vehicle collision in West Nipissing just after 11 a.m. on Jan. 23.

A 69-year-old Wawa resident was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two other people were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. One of them, a 74-year-old Sault Ste. Marie resident, later died.

Three others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

OPP have now charged 36-year-old Amanda Monteith-Sergerie from Sudbury with:

  • Dangerous Operation causing death - two counts
  • Dangerous Operation causing bodily harm - two counts
  • Operate unsafe vehicle
  • Fail to notify change of address
  • Fail to Provide Necessaries of Life - Child or Spouse
  • Improper muffler - motor vehicle
  • Driver - fail to properly wear seat belt
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.
