Man arrested after car spotted driving wrong way on Hwy. 17

A 69-year-old from southern Ontario is facing impaired charges after three local police departments responded to reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way on Highway 17 in Garden River.

On May 9, shortly before 3:30 a.m., the Sault Ste Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Batchewana First Nation Police Service along with the Anishinabek Police responded to a complaint of a car travelling the wrong way on Highway 17 near Syrette Lake Road.

Batchewana First Nation Police Service found the car travelling westbound in the eastbound double lanes and stopped the vehicle near Trunk Road in Sault Ste Marie.

While speaking to the driver, police had reason to believe alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and taken to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment for further testing

Bernard Dominas from Blandford-Blenheim Township was charged with:

  • operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs
  • operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The car was towed and impounded for seven days with the driver being issued a 90-day administrative drivers licence suspension.
