Committing a crime while committing a crime turned out poorly for a Sagamok Anishnabek resident last week, Ontario Provincial Police report.
On March 26, a man was arrested for breaking into the postal outlet in Massey. He was arrested at the scene and found to be carrying a cache of illegal drugs and bladed weapons, Manitoulin OPP Detachment said.
Police were dispatched to an alarm call at the facility at around 5 a.m. that morning.
“Police arrived on scene and observed signs that the facility had been broken into,” OPP said. “One person was located inside the facility, and they were safely arrested by police.”
Const. Berkley Parisien said after arresting the man and searching him and the backpack he was carrying, police found him in possession of suspected fentanyl, crack cocaine, methamphetamine and dried cannabis, with an estimated street value of $18,000.
The man was also carrying $1,300 in Canadian currency, several throwing knives and two large hunting knives.
The 42-year-old Sagamok resident is charged with:
- Break and enter a place to commit indictable offence
- Theft under $5,000
- Mischief under $5,000
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid
- Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Fail to comply with probation order - three counts
- Possession of over 30g of dried cannabis in a public place
- Possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling
The man was held in custody.
