Northern Credit Union employee shot in Wawa

The public is asked to avoid the area to allow police to conduct their investigation

3:53 p.m. update

At approximately 11 a.m. this morning, a shooter entered the Northern Credit Union branch in Wawa and seriously injured one employee, who was taken to hospital.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by today’s shooting," said Richard Adam, president and CEO of Northern Credit Union in a news release published on the credit union's website.

"Our thoughts are with the individual who was injured, and we are providing support to them and their family. The safety and wellbeing of our employees is our top priority, and they will have our full assistance,” Adam said. 

The release said Northern Credit Union is working closely with local authorities.

"At this time, there will be no further comment on the incident, from Northern Credit Union, to protect the confidentiality and privacy of our employees during this traumatic time." 

Until further notice the Wawa Branch will remain closed. 

SooToday has reached out to the OPP to ask if anyone was arrested.

The Ontario Provincial Police are advising the public of an increased police presence at a business on Mission Road, near Magpie Road, in Wawa. 

“The public is asked to avoid the area to allow police to conduct their investigation. There is no threat to public safety or local schools,” the OPP said in a release.
