MISSISSAUGA FIRST NATION – On Jan. 16, 2017, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties on Highway 17, Mississauga First Nation.
Police observed a westbound pick-up truck on Highway 17 travelling at a high rate of speed and attempted a vehicle stop. The pick-up truck continued travelling at speeds over 140 kilometres per hour and passing other vehicles dangerously.
Police learned the pick-up truck was stolen from the Toronto area. A spike belt was deployed successfully, west of Iron Bridge and the male driver arrested.
There were no injuries to the public or police.
As a result, Tyriel Beckford, 25 years of age, from Calgary, Alberta, was charged with:
- Possession property obtained by crime over $5,000-in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the CC; and
- Drive motor vehicle-no licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on Feb. 18, 2017.
