Stolen trailer recovered after OPP runs plate

While on patrol along Highway 17B in Thessalon, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police found a trailer that had been stolen a day earlier.

On Tuesday around 4:15 p.m., officers with the East Algoma OPP saw a blue pickup truck at a Thessalon gas station and looked up the plate on the trailer. The plate was reported as missing while the trailer had also been reported stolen on Dec. 2.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on Government Road.

Police say  the driver of the vehicle had a suspended licence and the vehicle wasn't insured.

The passenger was known to police and found to be in breach of conditions from a previous release order.

The passenger in the vehicle, Brendon Zotter, 34, from Sault Ste Marie was charged with:

  • possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • failure to comply with Release Order - other than to attend court

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on Dec. 4, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

The driver of the vehicle, Jennifer Brown, 41, from Sault Ste Marie was charged with:

  • possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • drive while under suspension
  • operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  • use plate not authorized for the pickup truck
  • use plate not authorized for the trailer
  • fail to surrender permit for trailer
  • drive motor vehicle-no permit

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Jan. 2, 2024, in Elliot Lake.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Brown is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
