“LOCK IT OR LOSE IT INITIATIVE”

(SUPERIOR EAST) Would you leave your purse or wallet on the hood of your car for someone to take? What about leaving your satellite radio, gps or even groceries with a sign saying free for the taking? Most people would never even dream of doing such a thing yet every day people leave their vehicles unlocked with their valuables inside.

According to data released by Statistics Canada in December 2008, Canada’s highest victimisation rate for individuals aged 16 and over, was for theft from a vehicle. Only 11% of vehicle thefts are solved in Canada and only 4 in 10 motor vehicles are recovered.

November 1-7, 2009 is Crime Prevention Week and police want to remind everyone to “Lock It or Lose It”. “Lock It or Lose It” focuses on vehicle theft and theft from vehicles. This idea while not new continues to prove very successful in reducing thefts.

For the next week you may see officers wandering parking lots and business sections checking vehicles to determine if owners have secured their vehicles and placed items of value out of sight. As a reminder a notice will be placed on the vehicle, indicating the state in which the vehicle was found when checked.

Today it was a police officer looking in your vehicle tomorrow it could be a thief.
