High school track stars shine at local meet

The city's top young athletes gathered Thursday at Jo Forman Track for a spirited day of track and field competition, with winners earning a spot in the upcoming NOSSA championship

The city high school track meet took place at the Jo Forman Track on Thursday.

Athletes from White Pines, Superior Heights, Korah, St. Mary’s College and École Notre-Dame-Du-Sault competed in various events including running, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus throwing and javelin throwing.

The top four finishers from each event in Thursday’s meet go on to the NOSSA championship to be held May 28 and 29 in the Sault.

From there, winners of each event in the North Region including the Sault, the Northwest (Thunder Bay and area) and Northeast (Timmins and area) will then advance to OFSAA at York University in Toronto, June 5-7.

“It was great. It went well, it went smoothly on Thursday. There’s a lot of athletic talent out there,” said Terri Lyn Della Penta, a Superior Heights Collegiate athletics director and city high school track meet committee member.

Cool weather played a small factor, Della Penta told SooToday.

“There were some injuries but for the most part the kids fared well. We're looking forward to NOSSA. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

"It should be a little bit warmer than it was today because when it's cold you always risk injuries with the athletes, so hopefully the weather will cooperate for us,” Della Penta said.
