SUGAR ISLAND, MICH. – Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie and Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority (EUPTA) leadership visited the Sugar Island Community Center Wednesday to discuss ice-breaking operations.
Capt. Marko Broz, Commander Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie and Mark Gill, Director of Vessel Traffic Service St. Marys River, presented information to island residents regarding Coast Guard ice-abreaking authority, priorities, and asset abilities. They also answered questions regarding ferry delays and spring breakout. Pete Paramski, Director of EUPTA, was also in attendance.
Spring breakout, the operation in which Coast Guard ice breakers begin to establish tracks in the ice of the St. Marys River for commercial shipping, will begin in the weeks prior to the opening of the Soo Locks on 25 March.
