A significant change is occurring right here in Sault Ste. Marie. As part of a major transformation to modernize steel production, Algoma Steel is replacing its traditional blast furnaces with new Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). It’s a project that not only positions our community as a leader in sustainable manufacturing but also supports local jobs, economic growth, and a cleaner environment.

Behind the scenes, Lafarge Canada has played a key role in helping bring this green infrastructure to life.

Building Sault Ste. Marie’s Future with Low-Carbon Materials

As Canada’s leader in sustainable and innovative construction solutions, Lafarge Canada supplied ECOPact low-carbon concrete, ECOPlanet cement, and smart concrete sensors to the project, products chosen specifically to reduce emissions during the construction phase.

“Being involved in a project of this scale in Sault Ste. Marie shows how local collaboration can lead to national impact,” says Jayson Hill, General Manager of Northern Ontario, Lafarge Canada. “Our low-carbon concrete and cement have allowed Algoma to align construction with its sustainability goals while supporting local performance, supply, and expertise.”

By 2030, Algoma’s transition to the EAF system is expected to cut carbon emissions by 70%, making it Canada’s most significant industrial sustainability project.

A Sustainable Build with Local Impact

Lafarge’s early involvement ensured sustainable materials were integrated from day one, contributing to lower embodied carbon while maintaining the strength and durability needed for heavy industry.

“Seeing more than 30,000m3 of concrete poured for our Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) project—equivalent to over 3,000 concrete trucks—really brings the scale of this build into perspective. says Mark Nogalo, Vice President – Strategic Transformation at Algoma Steel Inc. We’re proud to work with Lafarge and other local partners whose expertise is helping us deliver one of the most significant industrial transformations in Northern Ontario, while supporting local jobs and reducing emissions.”
