There are lots of renovations you can do to your home, but not all are guaranteed to give you a solid return on your investment.
One of the renos that can definitely give you the greatest bang for your buck is in the kitchen; this is where you can really increase the value of your home. A high-quality kitchen renovation is a tried-and-true way to build equity.
Kitchen design trends are constantly evolving and of course they will influence your decorating decisions. Luckily, there’s an array of exciting and bold cabinetry options, as well as luxurious fixtures, to choose from.
To learn more about how best to approach a kitchen reno—and some of the hottest kitchen design trends—we spoke with Samantha at Heritage Home Hardware in Sault Ste. Marie.
The following five kitchen trends are sure to add value to your home, she says.
Cabinetry
Light neutrals have been in style for quite some time now, but bold neutrals have also been gaining in steam. In fact, they’re one of the top kitchen cabinetry design trends.
A punch of colour in the kitchen can transform the whole look of the room and instantly modernize it. Many opt to stick with a softer neutral for their upper cabinetry, then have some fun with their lower cabinets, choosing a deeper, bolder, more saturated hue. The look is classic and refined; it’s also definitely more visually interesting than an all-white kitchen.
Fixtures
We used to be concerned about sticking to one type of metal with all of our fixtures and wanted to keep the look consistent, but things have loosened up a little and now having a mix of different metals is much more current. This is good news, because it means you no longer have to worry about having your kitchen faucet perfectly match your cupboard hardware.
You might consider pairing complementary metal finishes, such as matte black and sterling nickel. It adds interest and uniqueness. There really are no rules; for inspiration, you can do an online search and see which combinations appeal to you most.
Appliances
Top of mind with most consumers these days is energy consumption, and rightly so. When homeowners purchase appliances, they’re looking for machines that are top-quality and look sleek, but they also want them to be green and sustainable. Having energy-efficient appliances will also improve the resale value of your home.
Heritage Home Hardware offers an assortment of sleek appliances in black stainless steel and stainless steel that are sure to wow customers. Just because your appliances are green, doesn’t mean they can’t look great too.
Flooring
After years of dark-coloured flooring, then a move to mid-tones, we are once again embracing lighter hues. The look comes from Europe but is growing in popularity in Canada, lightening and brightening our entire homes. Just think about how much a lighter floor, in shades of light oak, birch and blonde wood, would transform your living spaces.
Making a change to your kitchen flooring in particular comes with its own set of challenges. You want a material that is durable, waterproof and dimensionally stable. Stone Polymer Composite, or SPC, is ideal for kitchens and is a great option to consider when renovating.
Paint
A new coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to update your kitchen and add major value to your home. Samantha recommends Beauti-Tone Paint; the line recently collaborated with Canadian Living magazine to create a stunning colour collection that celebrates the country’s distinctive style from coast to coast. Some of the hottest design colour choices include a range of neutrals, both soft and bold.
