There’s nothing like springtime in Algoma – a welcome return to sunny days ahead. Although the weather may be temperamental this time of year, New North Greenhouses is ready to help moms celebrate Mother’s Day with all the hot gift ideas needed to inspire your mom’s gardening passion.
Whether integrating trees, shrubs, or flowers into landscaping plans or plotting out an abundant vegetable garden, New North Greenhouse has a wide variety of plants available now for those looking for natural gifts for Mother’s Day.
“Our cold season vegetables are ready to go,” said Susan Richards, General Manager of New North Greenhouse, the largest garden centre in the Algoma area. “And even more exciting for gardeners, our warm season vegetables are also ready as well. To ensure their health if the weather is still too chilly to plant, they can be popped into your greenhouse or be taken in at night when temperatures are 10 degrees or colder.”
As any avid gardener knows, planting a garden – whether vegetable or flower – from seed can be a challenging process, especially given the potential for spring frost or below average temperatures. To make that process much easier, New North Greenhouse is well stocked with already grown species that are much more likely to blossom than a seed garden.
“We grow an amazing selection of flowers and vegetables and herbs, all grown locally at our facility,” said Richards. “They’re all nice and lush and full. We also have a really good selection of blooming perennials, and we’re well stocked in the nursery with trees and shrubs as well as fruit trees and fruit shrubs. All of those are hardy and ready to go in the ground right now. They would make wonderful gifts for Mother’s Day.”
As someone who has worked at New North Greenhouse since it opened 31 years ago, Richards said Mother’s Day is a special occasion to be working at the garden centre.
“One of my favourite days to work here every year is Mother’s Day, because I love seeing the families come and shop together. I’ve been here since day one for 31 years and now I’m seeing some of these people who were children when I first started bringing in their mothers and their own kids.”
Richards said she noticed a large spike in people investing in gardening during the pandemic, as people worried about food surety and social distancing took up the hobby. While she acknowledges not everyone will continue to garden now restrictions have eased, Richards says that learning to garden is an important skill to teach young people. A trip to the garden centre is a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends.
“Right now, the grandparent generation are the ones who know how to grow gardens, usually out of necessity. The current parent generation didn’t necessarily learn those skills and may not be passing that knowledge onto their kids. It’s very important for parents these days to have family projects where they’re doing gardening and teaching kids how to grow foods.”
Right now, New North has some exciting Mother's Day promotions for you and the family.
