This year, local chiropractor Dr. Todd MacLean has welcomed Dr. Kelsey Hroch, ND, owner of Northern Wellness Collective and a naturopathic doctor, to his office at 391 Pim Street.
A practicing chiropractor for 32 years, Dr. MacLean’s clinic currently includes two registered massage therapists, Danielle Turgeon and Paige Furbacher. The addition of Dr. Hroch will offer the clinic’s patients further options for their healthcare needs.
Dr. Hroch is also Dr. MacLean’s niece, making this addition to the office especially meaningful for the two of them.
Dr. Hroch was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, just as her uncle was. She graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2022 and joined his practice in May 2023. Inspired by her uncle’s dedication to his patients, Dr. Hroch has pursued a path in healthcare with a focus on comprehensive and preventative care.
“I lost my dad when I was 11 to cancer, which led me down the path to healthcare. Todd is a father figure to me, so to see how he helps patients really inspires me.”
In her practice, Dr. Hroch takes a comprehensive approach to patient care, addressing the whole person to identify the root causes of symptoms. This philosophy aligns with the principles of naturopathic medicine, emphasizing the importance of preventative care.
Naturopathic doctors like Dr. Hroch are able to run certain diagnostic lab tests, such as bloodwork. When patients require imaging or additional services beyond her scope of practice, she collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care. This integrative approach helps fill healthcare gaps, particularly in northern communities where access to medical services can be limited.
“A lot of people have lost access to a doctor in the north. With the challenges we have in our healthcare system right now, naturopathic doctors can be a big support in terms of preventative medicine. says Dr. Hroch.
At the initial appointment with a new patient, Dr. Hroch spends 1.5 hours getting to know their whole medical history, building rapport, and diving into their concerns and symptoms.
Perhaps not a widely known fact is that many naturopathic, chiropractic and massage services are covered by workplace healthcare benefits. Naturopathic doctors are also able to treat a wide variety of conditions. It’s a broad scope of practice with a focus on individualized care.
While Dr. Hroch does general practice, she also has a particular focus on reproductive health, providing comprehensive care through fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum, and has received additional training in that area. She offers tailored support for fertility through diet, lifestyle guidance, supplements, and acupuncture, which is a significant part of her practice. During pregnancy and the postpartum period, Dr. Hroch ensures mothers receive optimal care, addressing both physical and maternal mental health, and supporting their overall well-being as they navigate early motherhood.
Dr. Hroch is passionate about staying up-to-date with the latest research and changes to standards of care. She has delivered talks about research updates to her ND colleagues, most recently presenting an update on gestational diabetes. She says she looks forward to presenting at other public-facing summits in the near future.
Dr. MacLean, in his 32 years of treating musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries, has seen the importance of a patient being supported by a healthcare team: medical doctor, chiropractor, physiotherapist, massage therapist, and more. The addition of a naturopathic doctor will only increase patient options. He believes they all contribute their expertise and play an important role in a patient’s overall health and recovery.
“In the big picture it benefits the patient,” says Dr. MacLean.
For Dr. Hroch, being a part of the team and treating members of the Soo community this past year has been as meaningful as she thought it would be.
