The first step of almost every visit to Sault Area Hospital (SAH), is “testing”. Tests guide nearly every diagnosis and treatment decision – and over 2 million tests are performed every year in the laboratory at SAH. Over 870,000 of these tests rely on chemistry analyzers. 

Chemistry analyzers perform some of the most common and critical tests: they check organ function, diagnose diseases, monitor treatment, identify imbalances, and provide emergency testing. At SAH, they run 24 hours a day, seven days a week – and now, they need to be replaced.

This spring, JJ, Donna, and Mary Hilsinger have pledged to match every donation made to Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAH Foundation) towards new chemistry analyzers for the lab! This means every gift you make to SAH Foundation will have double the impact – but only until June 30th.

Each chemistry analyzer will cost approximately $180,000, and two are needed. That means, with the commitment from JJ, Donna and Mary, SAH Foundation will need to raise $180,000 to fully fund both analyzers. 

Whether you give $25 or $250, every dollar is matched – and every nickel has an impact. Why every nickel? When you take the 870,000 tests run every year on the chemistry analyzers, and their expected lifespan of 10+ years, the $180,000 price tag works out to less than 5 cents per test. That means that your $20 donation not only doubles to $40 in impact, but it will help SAH provide over 800 tests! 

 “We all need to visit the hospital during our lives, and the lab at SAH is crucial for patient support,” said JJ Hilsinger. “I’ve seen these tools, myself – they don’t shout, they don’t complain, they don’t argue, they just whirr... day after day, as a key component of the lab. Our hospital can’t go without them.”
