Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) and CreationCamp are teaming up to offer an exciting and educational 2-day Game Design and Development Workshop for students in grades 9 through 12 on July 14th and 15th.
This free hands-on workshop gives local youth the opportunity to hone their creativity, coding and game design skills with guidance from professionals in the industry. It is designed for students with little or no experience in game design or programming.
Introduction to Game Development
Students can expect to learn the beginnings of game development including coding, design, character development, game enemies and game-overs from real-world game and software development experts. They will also learn how to manipulate the layout, move platforms, edit images and use events to manipulate the play space.
Students will use Construct 3, which is a game creation tool that is used by many professional game development companies. Along with learning about game design and development, students will also learn the basics of this powerful game design engine.
“We expect this workshop to be an awesome experience for students with some excellent exposure to Construct 3,” says Susan George, ICT Manager for SSMIC.
Virtual and Accessible
SSMIC’s 2-day workshop is funded through FedNor, delivered 100% virtually and at no cost to students. There will be many opportunities for student/instructor interactions throughout duration of the workshop. Students will be able to talk with the software developers about their experiences in the industry as well as learn about possible career paths.
“Students can expect to interact with other students, instructors, and professionals in the industry during this workshop,” explains Susan. “The amount of their interaction is at their comfort level. There are activities, however, that will be required to complete in order to progress through the workshop.”

The Game Design and Development Workshop runs from 9 am to noon on July 14th and 15th and is open to students in grades 9 through 12. The course description and learning outcomes can be found here.
