People often joke that Mohammad Ali shares a name with the legendary boxer—and the comparison isn’t far off. A boxer himself, Mohammad brings the same discipline and determination to the job site as he does to the ring. But his true passion lies in transforming spaces through drywall, painting, and renovation—building his reputation one project at a time.
Mohammad was born in Syria, and at age twelve began working alongside his father, learning his trade within a year and a half. In 2017 at age seventeen, he moved from Syria to Sault Ste. Marie, stepping into an entirely new culture and language.
While attending high school and teaching himself English, Mohammad—who refers to himself as a “self-taught teacher”—continued working in the trades, quickly gaining clients through word-of-mouth. He soon began printing and handing out business cards, even completing work for his teachers—as well as their relatives, including parents, siblings, and extended family—while still in high school.
Still, Mohammad remained dedicated to his education. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Visual Art, alongside 13 years of hands-on experience in drywall, painting, and renovations. “While education is invaluable, equally important is the experience of building your own business and pursuing entrepreneurial growth alongside your studies,” says Mohammad.
As Mohammad describes it, he handles “everything from the foundation to the final flourish,” covering every aspect of both commercial and residential projects. In addition to framing, Mohammad’s skills include drywall, mudding/plastering, interior and exterior painting, spray painting, wallpaper installation, backsplash installation, flooring installation (parquet, vinyl, and more), popcorn ceiling removal, and suspended ceiling installation.
Something that Mohammad is passionate about is helping his customers understand that they don’t have to choose the most expensive product. Instead, he helps them find similar materials that can provide the same results at a more affordable price— helping them save money where they can, without compromising on quality. He also talks to customers about the importance of proper preparation, as a well-prepared surface ensures the longevity of drywall and paint.
A common question Mohammad receives is about cost per square foot. He emphasizes that every job is unique, with factors like the condition of the space, materials required, and the complexity of the work.
To ensure an accurate quote for painting or drywall, he prefers to evaluate the project in-person before providing an estimate.
When Mohammad first moved to the Soo, it was a huge life change for him. But over time, he found ways to connect with his community. Local events, friendly neighbours and small acts of kindness made him feel more at home. He even volunteered at Sault Community Career Centre, helping other people who were new immigrants to the area.
When newcomers arrived, Mohammad supported them in several ways, making sure they had everything they needed to settle in, and acting as an interpreter when necessary. “I wanted to make sure they didn’t face the same language barriers I once did,” says Mohammad. He also provided interpretation support for several students at his high school.
“It’s challenging when you move to a new country and don’t speak the same language. It can make even the simplest things feel impossible,” says Mohammad. “Helping someone understand a language is helping them find their voice in a new world.”
After nearly eight years of living in Sault Ste. Marie, the city has truly become home for Mohammad. He has earned a strong reputation for his reliability, dedication, skilled craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
What was once shared only by word-of-mouth has now reached a wider audience through his Google Business page, website, and Facebook page. He now leads a trusted crew, and together they take on projects of all sizes. From small repairs to large-scale renovations, they bring skill,, commitment, and professionalism to every project.
“I don’t let my work become monotonous; I always find ways to innovate and bring something new to every project,” said Mohammad. “Without a doubt, I learned the craft from my father—but I’ve elevated it over the years. My background in visual arts allows me to approach each project with an artistic lens. The result is more than just renovation, it’s craftsmanship. I make it feel like a finished piece of art.”
