At St. Mary’s College (SMC), leadership is more than a title—it is a journey rooted in service, confidence, and compassion. From Grade 9 onward, students are encouraged to lead through action, whether by mentoring younger peers, organizing charitable initiatives, or representing their school with pride.
“At St. Mary’s College, students are given leadership opportunities which are rooted in our Catholic faith. Truly, Servant Leadership is at the core of who we are as St. Mary’s Knights,” says Mario Rocchetta, SMC Chaplain.
Leadership in Every Corner
Whether students are interested in governance, athletics, the arts, or advocacy, there is a place to lead at SMC. Opportunities include Student Council, Student Senate, Link Crew, Yearbook, Grad Committee, Book Club, Indigenous Student Union, Drama Club, SMC Radio, and athletic team leadership. French Immersion students also participate in Équipe Franco-fun, supporting elementary immersion students in their transition to high school.
“Our students demonstrate their commitment to bettering our world in so many ways—whether through visits with retirement home residents or global Development and Peace initiatives,” Rocchetta adds.
Leadership is not limited to formal roles. Teachers and staff actively identify and support students with potential, encouraging them to take on responsibilities and build confidence through mentorship and collaboration.
“We have paired up with an elementary school to help in their fruits and vegetable program,” shares Melissa Abbott, Independent Living Skills Teacher. “It’s a good opportunity for students in Culinary Skills to be leaders, especially while supporting ACE students transitioning to ILS.”

Leading with Heart
At SMC, leadership means impact. Students organize and lead major initiatives, including:
- Relay for Life, raising over $105,000 for cancer research
- SMC World Cup Championship, supporting the Twinkie Foundation
- Operation Smile, funding life-changing surgeries for children
- Stuff-a-Bus, collecting toys in partnership with the City of Sault Ste. Marie
- A Valentine’s Day card drive, delivering handmade cards to hospital patients
- An Indigenous mural project, led by the Indigenous Student Union
“Every year, the Independent Living Skills Team hosts a bowling tournament welcoming over 120 neurodiverse students from across the region,” says Heidi Zagordo, Special Education Lead Teacher. “Our students serve as lane leaders, assist with food service, and host the awards. They develop empathy, leadership skills, and an appreciation for community.”
Participation in Special Olympics events also allows students to showcase athletic talents, build confidence, and explore leadership in inclusive spaces.
“These experiences encourage students to fully explore their leadership potential,” Zagordo adds.

Skills That Last a Lifetime
Leadership opportunities at SMC are designed to prepare students for success beyond graduation. Real-world skills, like project management, public speaking, and collaboration, are developed through both extracurricular and classroom experiences. Courses in Careers, Civics, and Business Studies include lessons on financial literacy, time management, and goal setting.
Students can further specialize through the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in:
- Business
- Construction
- Health & Wellness
- Hospitality & Tourism
- Non-Profit in Education
SHSM students earn certifications, complete field experiences, and graduate with a red seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, setting them apart for post-secondary and career pathways.

A Culture of Support
SMC’s guidance team offers support for college and university applications, scholarships, and co-op placements. Teachers help students highlight leadership experiences that showcase character and initiative.
“At St. Mary’s College, leadership is not about titles or positions, but about service, integrity, and building each other up,” said Tiziana Palumbo, SMC Vice-Principal. “Our culture is rooted in helping every student grow into the person God is calling them to be.”

Step Up. Stand Out. Lead Boldly.
Students, both current and prospective, are encouraged to connect with the school to explore leadership opportunities. Whether joining a club, mentoring others, or organizing an event, leadership begins with one step—and that journey can start today.
