With an 100+ year history in Sault Ste. Marie, Spadoni’s Furniture & Appliances was recently named the 2025 Dealer of the Year for MEGA Group/BrandSource Canada. Spadoni’s owner/operator Alan Spadoni and his son Angus were honoured at the buying group’s awards ceremony last month, held in Nashville, Tennessee.
“I was overwhelmed. I didn’t see it coming. We work very hard as a company to succeed and to do our best for the local economy,” says Alan.
Brandsource supports independent dealers with the tools they need to compete effectively with online merchants and national big-box chains. They give their Dealer of the Year Award to the business that utilized their tools the most with the best results. These tools include an operating system that integrates with the website, an accounting system, marketing, and more— huge benefits for an independent business.
Alan says that joining BrandSource a few years ago has propelled them forward and grown Spadoni’s online sales. The Spadoni’s website can tell customers what’s in stock, allow them to buy online, choose between pickup or delivery, and utilize a chat function if they need support.
The history of Spadoni’s spans generations. It was originally a bicycle repair shop, founded in 1918 by Alan’s grandfather Adolfo. The business later expanded into hardware and furniture, and continued successfully for some 80 years. After Spadoni’s closed, its historic James Street location was left vacant for five years.
In 1996, after years of hard work and lean living, Alan was able to reopen the building and grow his own business into what it is today. Spadoni’s Furniture and Appliances now features over 20,000 square feet of furniture, appliances and other home goods. “I was very emotional about winning this award, because this business is a restart,” says Alan.
“Those humble beginnings were humble. It was a journey like you would not believe,” he adds.
The tight-knit crew at Spadoni’s was thrilled to hear the news. Alan, who can often be found working in the back, says that the whole business is a group effort. This supportive atmosphere is reflected in the customer service at Spadoni’s, which is what they are complimented on the most. “We have the best service network in our area. You’re never left without support when you buy here,” says Alan.
One Google review for Spadoni’s, from during the height of the pandemic, speaks to this level of service:
“My washer broke, and because of Covid-19 I would have had to wait 2 months before I was able to get a washer at another big-name store (because they ship everything in). Spadoni's was recommended to us and they did not disappoint. They had washers and dryers in stock so we were able to get what we needed within the week at a cheaper price than we would have been paying at the big-name stores. The delivery guys were two of the most polite, conscientious men. They got me up and running and I didn't have to do anything. The whole process from beginning to end was smooth and stress-free.”
As a local business owner and lifelong Soo resident, Alan hopes that this award will bring a little more attention to an area of Sault Ste. Marie that is sometimes overlooked. He reflects on how much the community has supported Spadoni’s over the years.
“People shop here and they support us. They gave us this award.”
