Métis activist, scholar to offer artist's talk and workshops at Algoma University this week

Visiting Artist Lecture by Dylan Miner

The Visual Art Program at Algoma University is very pleased to announce an artist talk Dylan Miner: Gichi-mookomaanan miinawaa Gichi-Maazhigaa’aabkook // From Big Knives to Big Pipelines.

Dylan A.T. Miner is a Wiisaakodewinini (Métis) artist, activist, and scholar. He is currently director of American Indian and Indigenous Studies and associate professor at Michigan State University. Miner is also adjunct curator of Indigenous art at the MSU Museum and a founding member of the Justseeds artists collective. He holds a PhD from The University of New Mexico and has published more than sixty journal articles, book chapters, critical essays, and encyclopedia entries. In 2010, he was awarded an Artist Leadership Fellowship through the National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian Institution).

Miner has been featured in more than 20 solo exhibitions – with many more planned in the near future – and has been artist-in-residence or visiting artist at institutions such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, École supérieure des beaux-arts in Nantes, Klondike Institute of Art and Culture, Rabbit Island, Santa Fe Art Institute, and numerous universities, art schools, and low-residency MFA programs. His book Creating Aztlán: Chicano Art, Indigenous Sovereignty, and Lowriding Across Turtle Island was published in 2014 by the University of Arizona Press. His artist’s book Aaniikoobijigan // Waawaashkeshi was published this year by Issue Press. He recently commenced the Bootaagaani-mini ∞ Drummond Island Land Reclamation Project.

In addition to the talk Miner will offer two workshops:

  • Mazinibaganjiganan // Birchbark Biting Workshop – Friday ,Nov. 3, 11:30 a.m., Room 113 of the Convergence Building
  • Screenprinting Workshop: Saturday, Nov. 4, 12 p.m. Room 124 of the Convergence Building. Bring a clean T-shirt if you wish to print one of Dylan’s graphics on your own shirt! Paper will be provided.

The talk and workshops are free and open to all. 

The Canada Council for the Arts generously supports the Visiting Artist Lecture Series at Algoma University, which is presented by the Department of Music and Visual Art.
