Snow and ice pellets will fall on the Sault tonight

2024-11-29-snowstorm7

A significant change in weather is expected for Sault Ste. Marie over the next 24 hours, as the current rain transitions to snow by tonight.

“Initially, there could be some freezing rain and ice pellets mixing in this evening,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson.

A rainfall warning is currently in effect, with 16 mm of rain already recorded.

“Total accumulations are expected to reach 20 to 30 mm before the changeover to snow,” he said.

Following the transition, two to five cm of snow is anticipated overnight and into Thursday morning.

A weather alert has been issued.

“For Thursday, we’re looking at overall temperatures not too far off seasonal values,” Coulson said.

“The snow will end by the late morning and then potentially still some blowing snow around there as there are going to be some gusty winds from the northwest.”

Thursday’s expected high is -3 C, compared to the long-term average of -1 C.

The weekend outlook suggests seasonal temperatures, with daytime highs around -4 C to -5 C on Saturday and Sunday, Coulson said.

Looking ahead to March Break, Coulson noted a generally quiet start, with temperatures climbing slightly above normal by Tuesday. However, he cautioned about the potential for more active weather mid-week.

“There’s no consensus right now on the weather models, but it does look like there’s another possibility of a storm system moving through Wednesday or Thursday of next week,” he said.
