Liberal Terry Sheehan is on the verge of knocking off Conservative contender Hugh Stevenson after a back and forth race, receiving over 47 per cent of the vote to Stevenson’s 44.9 per cent.

As the incumbent for the former riding of Sault Ste. Marie, Sheehan has received 29,917 votes compared to 28,432 for Stevenson with two polls remaining as of 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

“We have coalesced into this great, great group of people that will never, ever, ever back down, sit down,” Sheehan said at his election party.

Also running in the new riding of Sault Ste. Marie - Algoma, which includes a portion of Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing, was Laura Mayer for the NDP. 

Robyn Kiki Eshkibok ran for the Green Party and James Collins ran for the Christian Heritage Party.
