A Sault city councillor says he has received complaints from constituents about NDP and Conservative signs placed near a First World War memorial.
"I have had a few people call me in my role with the city, upset by Dr. Hugh Stevenson and Laura Mayer . . . having election signs set up in front of the cenotaph at the top of Gore St.," said Ward 5 councillor Corey Gardi in a post on Facebook that went up on Wednesday at 7:19 a.m.
He added: "I'm sure they would both agree it's a bad look, and quite disrespectful. Hopefully their teams can relocate them."
The War Memorial Stone was erected in 1923 to honour fallen soldiers, according to a Government of Canada website on military memorials. It's located at the nexus of Cathcart Street and Wellington Street West at the north end of Gore Street.
In recent weeks, Gardi has used his personal Facebook account to post content from the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau and incumbent local candidate Terry Sheehan.
In the recent provincial election, Gardi endorsed NDP candidate — and fellow city councillor — Lisa Vezeau-Allen.
By 8:06 a.m., less than an hour after his post, the Facebook account for Mayer's campaign thanked Gardi for bringing it to their attention and noted the NDP election signs had been removed from in front of the memorial.
As of 12:30 p.m., two large Conservative election signs for Hugh Stevenson were still about 25 feet in front of the memorial, but by 5 p.m. they were gone.
