An expired vehicle permit paved the way for police to stop a vehicle on a Sault Ste. Marie street two years ago.
It also resulted in charges for a woman who had a fanny pack containing illicit drugs.
Brittany Mattaini, 37, pleaded guilty Tuesday to three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking –fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine.
The traffic stop happened on April 28, 2023.
Superior Court Justice Michael Varpio heard city police noticed a 2016 white Hyundai travelling east on MacDonald Avenue at 5:30 p.m. It had a vehicle permit that had expired in December 2022.
Officers activated their lights and pulled over the Hyundai on MacDonald at Poplar Avenue.
After requesting the driver's licence, insurance and vehicle permit, they asked the passenger her name.
When they ran Mattaini's name, they learned she was wanted on a committal warrant for driving while under suspension.
She was asked to step out of the vehicle and was arrested.
Mattaini was wearing a silver and black Victoria Secret bag around her neck.
Inside the bag was a fanny pack, federal prosecutor Lindsay Marshall told the court.
The green and black camouflage fanny pack had pre-packaged baggies containing drugs.
A total of 23.9 grams of fentanyl, 26.14 grams of cocaine and 25.94 grams of methamphetamine were seized, Marshall said.
Mattaini was in court for a two-day trial, but entered guilty pleas after the Crown and defence lawyer Eric McCooeye indicated they had resolved the matter.
A date for sentencing will be set on June 4.
