The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service had the area around the former New American Pub on Bay Street taped off as it conducts a death investigation on Friday, March 29, 2025

SooToday has learned more about the shooting that took place on Thursday before midnight.

A young woman who lives on the third floor of the building said she didn't hear the shooting, but she did see the aftermath.

Her apartment is roughly two doors down from where the shooting occurred.

“My girlfriend said she was sound asleep,” said Jeremie Bedell, speaking on behalf of the woman since she didn’t want to be named.

When she got up to go to the shared washroom, she "saw the victim on the hall floor, bleeding out from his head," Bedell said, adding that the man was white.

By then, the building manager at 602 Bay St. had already called 911.

Bedell said his girlfriend was in shock.

“She has never seen something like that ever.”

When police arrived, they did a room by room search of the entire building.

“I told her it is procedure to make sure no one was hiding or forced to hide the shooter,” Bedell said.

Many of the tenants at 602 Bay St., the former New American Pub building, are from countries like the Philippines, Nigeria, and Iran.

Bedell said most are working on their permanent residency while going to school, although "a small handful are local."

"Some young adults like my girlfriend are fleeing from the terrible countries they were born in in search of better lives. Some are here for school because in countries like Iran and the Philippines people cannot afford school."

He said the building doesn't seem very safe.

“The fact there are drugs going through such a small place - it’s as terrible as on our streets,” he said.

Bedell believes the city needs more police officers for the amount of crime that happens here.

"They should build a police station in each of the four corners of the Sault and hire more officers," he said.

He said it's sad that another person in this city has lost their life due to violence.

On Friday, police confirmed the man died after being transported to hospital.

Officers completed a grid search of the area.

A news release said the investigation is ongoing and officers are expected to remain on the scene throughout the weekend.

“It is believed that this is an isolated incident, as the people involved are known to each other," the release said.

Police confirmed no arrests had been made as of noon on Friday.

Officers are continuing to investigate.
