Suspected drunk driver in fatal Easter crash freed on bail

Gregory Parise, 18, will be released from custody today under strict conditions, four days after a deadly collision between a pickup truck and e-bike killed a Grade 10 Korah student

The accused in a fatal Easter weekend collision that claimed the life of 15-year-old Connor Dunn is being released on bail, with conditions.

Gregory Parise, age 18, appeared by video in Sault Ste. Marie bail court on Thursday facing four charges in relation to the April 20 collision on Goulais Avenue at Third Line.

Parise faces four charges: impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, dangerous operation causing death, and dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

None of the allegations have been tested in court, and Parise is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Parise was originally facing eight charges, but four of them were dropped during a court appearance earlier this week.

A publication ban prohibits reporting on any evidence presented during the bail hearing.

Parise, who turned 18 on March 6, was represented by defence attorney Dave Bayliss, who appeared by video.

Because it is a conflict matter, Parise's appearance was overseen by Justice of the Peace Chantal Bertrand, who serves in the west region of the province. She appeared by video, as did Michael Michaud for the Crown, who is also based in the west region.

Bertrand was expecting to adjourn the matter to a later date for a contested bail hearing, but Michaud informed her the Crown has consented to release Parise on bail, under specific conditions.

Included in those conditions is a requirement that Parise reside with a surety, that he remains in that residence from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., has a non-contact order with a number of individuals, is restricted from operating a motor vehicle, prohibited from sitting in the driver’s seat of any vehicle, cannot possess keys or fobs for any motor vehicle, must abstain from the consumption of alcohol or drugs and is prohibited from possessing any weapon as defined by the Criminal Code.

Parise will be released Thursday from the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre and will next appear in court on May 26.

Dunn, 15, has been identified as the teenager killed in a suspected impaired driving incident over Easter weekend in Sault Ste. Marie’s west end. Police say he was riding an e-bike with a fellow Korah student early Sunday morning when it was hit by a pickup truck at Goulais Avenue and Third Line.

Dunn’s friend sustained serious injuries but survived.

At the scene of Sunday’s fatal crash, there is now a growing roadside memorial full of flower bouquets, hockey sticks and sports jerseys. On a metal telephone pole, friends have written “Fly High” in black marker.
