Teen faces charges after fire on Queensgate Boulevard

Police say no injuries reported after blaze started in bedroom at around 1:30 a.m.

Police say a local youth has been charged with arson and mischief in connection with a fire early this morning.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says someone called 911 around 1:30 a.m. to report a fire in the 100 block of Queensgate Boulevard.

Officers sent to the scene were told by Sault Fire Services a fire had occurred inside a bedroom, causing significant damage within the room.

"An investigation revealed the accused youth had lit something on fire in the kitchen and returned to their bedroom," police said in a release.

"They then left their bedroom once it was on fire."

No physical injuries were reported, police said.

A 16-year-old has been charged with:

  • Arson – Disregard for Human Life
  • Mischief – Over $5,000
  • Failure to Comply with Sentence (under the Youth Criminal Justice Act)

The teen was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Their name cannot be published under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
