City Police Requesting the Public’s Assistance in Hit and Run Investigation:

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Traffic Services are requesting the public’s assistance in their investigation into a hit and run collision involving a Pickup truck and a cyclist. The collision occurred on the 4th of August at approximately 5:38 pm at the Townhouse Complex at 702 Second Line West. A five year-old cyclist was travelling through the parking lot on his bike and was struck by a pickup truck that was reversing from a parking spot in the lot. After the collision, the male driver of the truck stopped and spoke with the child for a moment and then left the scene. The child received minor injuries.

The truck was either a Chev or GMC extended cab, long box, blue in colour. The only description of the driver is that he is a male and was wearing a cowboy hat at the time of the collision.

Officers are requesting that the driver involved contact city police at 949-6300, Traffic Services at either Extension 383 or 348 so that they can complete the report.

If anyone witnessed the collision or has any information regarding this collision, please contact city police.

Update to Street Racing and Collision Involving Police Cruiser:

The second male driver allegedly involved in the street racing incident on Goulais Avenue from yesterday morning was charged late yesterday afternoon. Matthew English, age 19 years, of 337 Parkland Avenue has been charged with one count of Race a Motor Vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act. He is to appear in Traffic Court on the 9th of September.

City Police are asking for the public’s assistance in their investigation into this incident:

Anyone with any information or that may have witnessed the collision involving the Sault Ste Marie Police Service’s cruiser and the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu on the 12th August around 8 am at the intersection of Allen’s Side Road and Second Line West.

Police are also looking for any witnesses to the street racing incident on Goulais Avenue just prior to the collision. Police are looking to speak with the drivers of a black Kia and a red vehicle that had pull to the shoulder area to avoid from being struck at the time the Police Cruiser was attempting to pull the involved vehicles over.

Four Males in Custody for Robbery at Shoppers Drug Mart:

Investigation Services are currently investigating a robbery that occurred at 4:41 pm yesterday at the Shoppers Drug Mart on Second Line West. One male accused entered the pharmacy, produced a note indicating he had a gun and demanded oxycontin. The male fled on foot towards Korah Road. Police attended on scene, an investigation commenced and approximately 20 minutes later, police arrested four males believed to be involved in the robbery. Two males were arrested during a vehicle s stop on Asquith Street and shortly after, the other males were arrested at a west end residence. The males are currently in custody all charged with robbery. There are no other details to be released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

Two Males Arrested after Stealing Vehicle:

City Police received a call last night around 12:49 am regarding a 1996 Volvo that had been stolen from a residence on North Street. At 1:02 am police located and stopped the vehicle on Ohio Drive. Officers arrested the male driver and one male passenger fled on foot. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service Canine unit was deployed and after a short track, the second male was located and arrested in the Cambridge Place area.
The driver arrested was 18 year-old Daniel Murphy of 160 Amber Street, charged with one count of Possession of Stolen Property and one count of Breach of a Release Document. At the time of the incident, he was on an undertaking release order with conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
The second male, was 16 year-old male youth. He was charged with one count of Possession of Stolen Property and one count of Possession of a Prohibited Weapon for Purpose Dangerous to Public.
They are to appear in bail court this morning.

Domestic Related Arrests:

1) A 39 year-old male was arrested on the 13th of August at 1:13 am at a west end residence and charged with one count of Assault. It is alleged that on the 13th of August the accused got into a verbal argument with his girlfriend just outside her residence and he assaulted her. The victim received non-life threatening injuries as a result. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

2) An 18 yer-old female was arrested on the 13th of August at 4:50 am at the city police station and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that on the 13th of August just after midnight the accused assaulted her ex-boyfriend in the area of Boundary Road and Park Street. The accused is to appear in court on the 14th of September.

Male Shoplifter Charged:

63 year-old Stanley, Anthony Tait of #407-615 Bay Street was charged with one count of Theft under $5,000.00 yesterday afternoon at 1:32 pm at Sears. It is alleged that the accused attended at the store around 1:15 pm and stole a camcorder, some tools and jewellery from the store. He was apprehended by store security and held for police. He is to appear in court on the 14th of September.

Property Crimes:

Attempt Break and Enter Reports:


• Attempt break and enters were reported to apartments at Terry Fox Place and Breton Road as well as a unit on Constellation Place.

Theft Reports:

Vehicles were entered on Palomino Drive, Wellington Street West, the 300 block of Old Goulais Bay Road and the 1000 block of Lake Street. Items stolen included, Laptops, camera, CD’S, an Ipod Touch, Wallets and a purse.

Police would like to once again remind the public to lock their vehicles and not leave any valuables in their unattended vehicle at any time.

Bear Sighting

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to advise the residents in the P-Patch area that there have been several bear sightings in their area in the past few days. Another sighting was reported early this morning. The bear has also been observed several times in the new recreational trail in the Black Road/Finn Hill area. The bears have been wandering into the back yards of some of the homes.
