The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service have concluded their ten month investigation into the sudden death of 35 year-old James Vecchio that occurred on April 16, 2009 at the Sault Ste. Marie Landfill Site at 402 Fifth Line East. Mr. Vecchio was an employee with the City of Sault Ste. Marie Board of Works and was working on an excavation project at the landfill site area at the time of the incident. A crane working the site, owned and operated by Millennium Crane Rentals, fell into the excavation pinning Mr. Vecchio causing life-threatening injuries. Mr. Vecchio was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Sault Area Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. After a lengthy and thorough investigation, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service have charged the crane operator, 56 year-old Anthony Vanderloo of 1435 Third Line East, the crane owner, 51 year-old David Brian Selvers of 25 Broos Road and #1531147 Ontario Limited operating as Millennium Crane Rentals with one count each of Criminal Negligence Causing Death.
A First Appearance Court date has been set for the 22nd of March 2010.

Update to Missing Person: Velma Soyatt

At approximately 8:11 am this morning the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a call from a local cab company after one of their drivers discovered the body of a deceased person near the frozen edge of the St. Mary’s River at the extreme south end of 1800 Queen Street East. Police, Fire and the Emergency Medical Services Unit immediately attended on scene and discovered a deceased elderly female.

Investigation Services and the Coroner attended on scene and have confirmed that the identity of the deceased female is 83 year-old Velma Soyatt. A preliminary investigation is underway and Investigations Services are now treating this as a sudden death investigation. Investigation Services indicate in the preliminary investigation that no foul play is suspected at this time. The investigation is now under the direction of the Coroner’s office and a post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Assistance in locating missing person

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently looking for a missing person and is seeking the public’s assistance in locating her.

83-year old Velma Soyatt left her east end residence this afternoon and has not been seen since. She is described as a being of medium build, 5’4” tall, with short grey hair and wears glasses. She was believed to be wearing a black coat with a fur collar and has a small brown book style purse with her.

Domestic Related Arrest

A 48 year-old male was arrested on the 10th of February at 7:08 am at his residence and charged with one count of assault, one count of sexual assault and one count of threaten death or bodily harm. It is alleged that on numerous occasions between September 2008 and the 6th of February 2010, while at their residence, the accused assaulted, sexually assaulted and threatened to kill his common law partner. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

Youth Arrested and Charged with Mischief

A 14 year-old male youth was arrested on the 10th of February at 4:20 pm after a family dispute at his residence. It is alleged that the accused punched several holes in his bedroom wall. He has been charged with one count of mischief and is to appear in bail court this morning.

83-year old Velma Soyatt left her east end residence yesterday afternoon and has not been seen since. She is described as a being of medium build, 5’4” tall, with short grey hair and wears glasses. She was believed to be wearing a black coat with a fur collar and has a small brown book style purse with her.
