Today, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced an extension of the cancellation of all sanctioned sports. As a result, all OUA athletics at Algoma University will be on hold until at least March 31, 2021.
“While we look forward to the return of OUA sports competitions when it is safe to do so, we will be closely monitoring ongoing health considerations and the viability of competing in regional exhibition opportunities," said Dave Trudelle, director of student life and ancillary services at Algoma University, in a release issued today.

Earlier this afternoon, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the extension of the cancellation of all OUA-sanctioned sports programming and championships up to March 31, 2021. The decision was based on current provincial public health guidelines and with the health and well-being of all OUA participants at the forefront.
Effective Jan. 1, 2021, members are responsible for determining their Return to Train guidelines and involvement in member-driven competitions/exhibition games, as per their institution's policies and within regional and provincial public health guidelines.
The decision made by the OUA Board of Governors reinforces the organization’s ongoing commitment to mitigating potential health risks for student-athletes, coaches, administrators, officials, and fans as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic. As noted by Dr. Deborah MacLatchy, chair of the OUA Board of Directors, “We recognize how disappointing this is to many, especially our student-athletes, but these are unprecedented times. We are committed to delivering OUA Sport once it is safe to do so.”
The decision follows ongoing conversations with public health authorities, as well as extensive contingency planning with the Board of Directors, member institutions, and other related advisors.
“We understand that this is a very challenging time and support the decisions that were made with the health and safety of everyone at the forefront of decision making,” states Dave Trudelle, director of student life and ancillary services at Algoma University. “While we look forward to the return of OUA sports competitions when it is safe to do so, we will be closely monitoring ongoing health considerations and the viability of competing in regional exhibition opportunities. Algoma will continue to support our student-athletes and coaches, including supporting student-athletes academically so they can have continued success with their studies while continuing training following provincial safety directives for an eventual return to full competition.”
Algoma University currently competes in the following OUA sports; basketball, cross-country running, curling, nordic skiing, soccer, and wrestling. Further information on the Thunderbirds Athletic program is available online.
