The Tree Lighting Memorial at Arthur Funeral Home is still happening this year, although it will be a little different than usual.
The Christmas season is a difficult time for families who have experienced a loss, whether recent or in the past. Arthur Funeral Home’s “Tree Lighting” will be held on Monday Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
For a minimum $20 contribution, a light can be placed on the tree in memory of a loved one, and with each donation you will receive your choice of an ornament dedicated to them.
The “Tree Lighting” has been going on for 24 years now. “When the bereavement group dissolved we took it over,” said Joni Cooke, general manager of Arthur Funeral Home. “A tree was planted on City Hall property, and every year on the 21st of December, which is Winter solstice, the tree is lit in memory of people who have passed away.”
“Traditionally people could purchase a light and all of the money would go to charity. This year with COVID-19, we’ll still be lighting the tree and collecting donations, but with the donation they will receive a keepsake ornament as well as the bulb on the tree. All proceeds will still go to charity,” she said.
Orders can be placed by calling 705-759-2522 and must be received before Dec. 7.
