For decades, the Hong Kong restaurant on Trunk Road has been a Mother’s Day staple in Sault Ste. Marie.
This Sunday, that takeout tradition will come to an end.
The landmark local eatery announced on Facebook that this Mother’s Day will be its last, with plans to eventually close the doors for good.
“Over the many years it has been a pleasure to be a part of your family traditions and sharing meals with each and every one of you,” the post says. “We would love for you and your family to join us this Sunday for our LAST Mother’s Day dinner service.”
The restaurant isn’t shutting down just yet, promising to provide more details “in the near future.”
“Don’t worry, we will not be disappearing overnight,” the post continues. “We want to make sure to give you all enough time to enjoy the Chinese food you all know and love. Gift cards can still be purchased and we are still accepting gift cards. We want to give you all enough time to use up any gift card(s) you may still have with us.”
The Hong Kong was originally launched by husband and wife Norman and Fay Poon, who "spent 24 hours a day together" working "tirelessly to establish a life for themselves, family and staff."
The restaurant has continued as a family business ever since.
