Sault Ste. Marie steel tube manufacturer Tenaris recognized its contractors for their commitment to health, safety, and the environment (HSE) during an awards ceremony on July 20.

Every year, the company schedules a three-week maintenance shutdown ro perform necessary repair and preventative work on equipment used in the manufacturing process such as in the hot rolling mill, heat treatment and finishing areas. In preparation for this work, about 240 contractors work and 100 Tenaris employees at the facility dedicating more than 4,000 hours of HSE training.

Tenaris said the total investment in the latest maintenance shutdown was $5 million.

The following recipients received awards:

• Contractor Excellence Award – Stobie Mechanical & Welding

• Environmental Stewardship Award – ISM Industries

• Best Housekeeping Award – S&T Group

• Work Safety Award - Novenco Consultants

• Commitment to Safety Award – WB Melback Corporation

“This is a huge undertaking that requires all parties to lead with safety, first and foremost,” said Tenaris health, safety, and environment director Gianluca Greco. “We recognize our team of Canadian suppliers and employees for their dedication to HSE.”

“The work is necessary to preserve the safety and performance of the equipment, while reinforcing all aspects that contribute to running a healthy operation, from housekeeping to repairs big and small,” said Tenaris operations senior director in Canada, Jacobo Montaño.

“This event requires a high level of coordination among all teams, and the positive results underscore the pride all involved took to execute this project, safety and successfully.”
