Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie has approved a master's degree in biology.

Algoma University is working to introduce two new graduate degrees this year.

The Sault Ste. Marie school said it has approved a master’s of science degree in biology, and a master’s degree in computer science is being considered for approval in February.

Asima Vezina, the school’s president, called the addition of graduate degrees “a major step forward” for Algoma.

“I would like to thank our academic leadership team and faculty involved for their efforts to reach this important milestone. Graduate programs such as these will be of considerable interest to students while providing numerous benefits for our campus communities as we generate new research activities for faculty and students,” Vezina said in a Jan. 26 news release.

“The graduate programs enable new funding opportunities to support research and innovative partnership opportunities with our community partners furthering Algoma’s purpose-driven impact.”

Algoma already offers an undergraduate program in biology, and its computer science program is offered both in Sault Ste. Marie and at its campus in Brampton
