The Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN) in Sault Ste. Marie is on the hunt for a culinary technician – the next step to establishing a food-processing company in the city.

Last February, Peter Bruijns, executive director of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, revealed RAIN is in the process of establishing an offshoot company, UpNorth Foods, which will produce a variety of foods manufactured from locally cultivated ingredients.

The company's first product is expected to be bottled hot sauce.

Now, the research facility is in hiring mode to bring on a culinary technician to lead its development.

In a job posting, the company said it’s looking to “build relationships with northern producers to source ingredients and develop regenerative food products in Northern Ontario.

“UpNorth Foods’ mission is to produce high-quality food products from northern food producers that grow through regenerative agriculture practices.”

The person chosen to lead that work will help test new recipes and trial product enhancements, among other duties.

A division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, RAIN conducts research and development projects to help grow and expand Northern Ontario’s food-production sector.

Among its notable projects is the Buy Algoma, Buy Local campaign, a print and online marketing campaign that showcases local producers and supporters of locally made products.
