Your Neighbourhood Credit Union is inviting community members to its March Break Community Skate – two free events designed specifically for beginners and those who have never skated before.
Taking place at the Soo Pee Wee Arena, this initiative is part of YNCU’s Motivate 2 Skate program, which aims to make skating more accessible and inclusive for all.
“We understand that not everyone has had the opportunity to learn how to skate, and we want to change that,” said Lisa Colangelo, Chief Executive Officer of YNCU, in a news release.
“This event is about creating a welcoming space where beginners can experience the joy of skating without pressure or barriers.”
The event details are below:
- Wednesday, March 12 - 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
- Friday, March 14 - 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Location: Soo Pee Wee Arena
In addition to the free ice time exclusively for beginners and first-time skaters, helmets and skates will be available to borrow. Sizes may vary and the items are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
YNCU will also have volunteers available at both sessions to assist with fitting skates and on-ice support.
“Our goal is to remove barriers and introduce as many people as possible to this classic Canadian winter activity,” adds Colangelo.
“We hope to see many new skaters on the ice this March Break!”
YNCU encourages individuals, families, and community groups to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn a new skill in a fun and supportive environment.
To sign up, attendees are encouraged to RSVP through email by contacting community@yncu.com.
Motivate 2 Skate began in Sault Ste. Marie in the fall of 2022 and has since expanded to Waterloo region, Woodstock, and London.
The program offers free skating lessons to international students at post-secondary institutions along with elementary students from the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, and beginner skaters.
Growing community connections one participant at a time, the Motivate 2 Skate program continues to inspire individuals to lead active and engaged lives.
