Sault Ste. Marie-based Avery Construction Ltd. has been awarded an $8,138,266 city contract to rebuild Peoples Road from Churchill Avenue to Penno Road.

That part of Peoples Road is expected to be closed until Nov. 28.

The job involves reconstruction of 850 metres of roadway including removals, earth excavation grading, granular sub-base and base, asphalt, concrete curbs and sidewalk, electrical/utility ducts and replacement of storm sewers, sanitary sewers and water mains.

The project will include construction of a multi-use trail from Second Line to Churchill Avenue.

The Agawa Canyon railroad crossing will be upgraded at the same time, subject to arrangements with Watco Companies, L.L.C., the railroad's owner.

Avery Construction was lowest of three bidders.

Trimount Construction Group Inc. bid $9.8 million.

Pioneer Construction Inc.'s bid was $10.3 million.

The city's engineering staff had estimated the work would cost $8.6 million.

"Council approved the first phase of the Peoples Road reconstruction in the 2025 capital budget," said Maggie McAuley, the city's manager of design and transportation.

"In the spring of 2024, the city finalized the class environmental assessment study to review overland and basement flooding in the area of Peoples Road.

"Increasing the capacity of the sanitary sewer was one of the recommendations of the environmental assessment, which results in the full reconstruction of the road from Churchill Avenue to Third Line," McAuley said.
