More than 200 guests gathered at the Grand Gardens Saturday evening to celebrate Black History Month with food, entertainment, and art.
Hosted by the African Caribbean Canadian Association of Northern Ontario (ACCANO), the annual event included a diverse showcase of local culture under this year’s theme Our Canadian Story: Black History Sault Ste Marie and Algoma region.
Dave Mornix, ACCANO vice-president, told SooToday that the event has grown exponentially since it began four years ago.
“Without question, the culture here is growing,” he said. “The culture is here, but it doesn’t have a profile. That’s one of the visions of ACCANO, to bring community together. Our tag line is ‘Bringing people together.’ That doesn’t mean just people of African descent, but everyone.”
