The day after a small fire broke out at Michaels, the art supply store on Second Line remains closed to the public.
At 5:43 a.m. on Monday morning, the Sault Ste. Marie fire department received a call about the fire, and found the cardboard compactor near the building ablaze on arrival.
GFL Sault Ste. Marie was called to the scene to move the compactor, after which firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.
"Once gained access to it, we were able to put out the fire in the bin," said Aaron Gravelle, public education officer with the Sault Fire Service.
Since the compactor is connected to the building via a chute, Gravelle said "there was quite a bit of smoke throughout the building," which led to the store's temporary closure.
As crews were cleaning inside Michaels on Tuesday morning, the alarm was accidentally set off again – bringing the fire department back to the business.
"Whenever we have a call from an alarm company like that, we go to investigate," Gravelle said.
SooToday reached out to Michaels to ask when the store would re-open, but no one answered the call.
