Downed power lines are keeping crews busy

Always assume any downed wire is live and never attempt to move it

With winter weather coming in like a lion, PUC Services is offering a reminder on how to stay safe when power lines come down.

Accumulating snow, ice and strong winds can create hazardous conditions, including power outages and fallen lines.

“Safety is our top priority,” said Jairus Patterson, PUC’s manager of corporate communications.

“Downed power lines are extremely dangerous. We urge everyone to stay at least 10 metres away from them and report any sightings immediately.

“Always assume any downed wire is live and never attempt to move it. Call our customer experience team immediately to report it," Patterson said.

Safety Tips During a Winter Storm

1) Stay Away from Downed Power Lines
Always assume any downed line is live and dangerous. Maintain a safe distance of at least 10 metres.

2) Avoid touching anything in contact with the line, such as trees, fences, or vehicles.

3) Report Hazards Immediately
Call PUC Services at 705-759-6500 to report downed lines or other electrical hazards. If a line is sparking or poses an imminent danger, call 911.

4) Prepare for Power Outages
Keep flashlights, batteries, and other emergency supplies readily available. Never use generators or outdoor heaters indoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

5) Limit Travel
Stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. Snow and ice can make conditions dangerous.

6) Download MyPUC App to Report Outages
Please report all power outages via the MyPUC app. This will keep the phone lines clear for emergencies.

PUC crews are out in the field, working swiftly to repair outages and damage caused by the weather.

The PUC team works around the clock to restore power and ensure the safety of the community. Please give PUC crews plenty of room when they are working to repair equipment.
