An iconic Canadian fast food chicken restaurant has announced its opening date for its first Sault Ste. Marie location.
Mary Brown's Chicken has announced an April 7 opening date for the 248 Northern Ave. E. location, in the same plaza as Winners and Metro.
In a Facebook post, the Sault Ste. Marie Mary Brown's is promising a free Big Mary chicken sandwich to the first 50 people in line.
It's unclear what time the store will open on the first day. Calls to the Mary Brown's head office were not returned.
A $220,000 building permit was issued by the city in November for the construction of the restaurant within the pad site, which also includes Firehouse Subs, Bar Burrito, Sessions Canabis and Osmow's Shawarma.
Mary Brown's opened its first restaurant in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1969, eventually spreading to more than 300 locations across the country.
Currently, the closest Mary Brown's location to the Sault is in Sudbury.

The addition of Mary Brown’s adds another option to the Northern Ave. plaza, which is quickly becoming a busy food hub. How do you think this development is shaping the area? Share your thoughts on traffic, accessibility, and what you'd like to see improved!
Parking needs to be addressed I think, at least in the winter time as spaces became incredibly limited with the snow hill.
My only small concern is the parking lot. It gets a little crazy at times
Traffic in this area is a nightmare now and it’s only going to get worse..Could use new options for eating out. Olive Garden, Applebees, Eastside Mario’s etc..Spread things out a bit. This city is not that big lots of room for sit and dining options.
I love all the new food choices but Durning the day getting in and out of that parking lot can be dangerous. A lot of people speeding to get in and out or to get to a spot before someone else does.
@ seaking, ... it would be good to have a variety, but we are in an economic war with the USA. We could use some equally fine Canadian restaurants, rather than the USA variety.
Mary Browns probably has the best chicken sandwich I've ever had, and their potato wedges are awesome. In terms of fast food joints, it's way ahead of some of the competition.
is there a bus stop nearby? is it easy access for people who don't drive or will they have to dodge alot of traffic?
Mary Browns is a Canadian food chain. We should support this franchise.
Only 2 months late !!!
Narrowing our streets is one of our cities biggest mistakes. It just causes more accidents.
I've never had a problem on Northern Ave with two lanes and a turning lane. It works fine. Bike lanes are good for that road. We needed them this winter for snow banks lol. The city should have expropriated some land when the church was torn down for a right hand turning lane onto GNR though. That would have alleviated some congestion.
Can not wait . I love popeyes but being its a Canadian chain I will support that
Not at all interested in this food choice. Take out fast food - not for me. A few " dining rooms " would be nice. Everything is take out. I cook, so no need for take out. If i go out i would prefer table service, etc.
The problem with all the takeout places is just how unhealthy most of it is.
The place looks big enough for tables so go sit and eat
Good to see a Canadian chain added to that location. Northern Avenue near that spot is a disaster. It was narrowed from 4 lanes to 2, to accommodate bike lanes no one uses. The 9 storey apartment building going up across the street, combined with several new additions to the plaza, are and will make the traffic situation worse.
I love Mary Brown's! And they're from my home town, St. John's. I'll be there regularly.
Thank goodness we have another chain to enjoy. We definitely need to have all the same options that make dining in Sault Ste. Marie like every single other city across Canada. /s
