NEWS RELEASE
REFUGEE705
*************************
Are you a youth between 12-18 years old? Would you like to learn about other cultures and make new friends?
Refugee705 invites you to participate in free bi-weekly activities and events with Global Friends! Generously funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Global Friends will challenge racism and linguistic barriers by promoting strong, healthy, cross-cultural relationships between Canadian-born, Indigenous and refugee youth.
The program will provide opportunities for local youth to build close friendships and develop a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity, and a chance for refugee youth to further develop their English language skills and become more engaged in the community.
Over the next twenty-four months, Global Friends will facilitate a wide range of activities:
- Arts and crafts
- Playing sports
- Touring local sites
- Exploring the outdoors
- Volunteering in the community
- Attending multicultural events
- Interesting workshops in photography, DJ’ing and street-art
- Culture sharing activities such as cooking, beading and drumming
Transportation, food and entrance fees are provided to ensure accessibility for all participants and their guardians. Online youth registration forms can be found here.
Registration can also be completed in person at the Sault Career Centre, located at 503 Queen St. E. on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Looking for other ways to be involved?
We are currently in need of artists, guest speakers and workshop facilitators who may be interested in sharing their craft, skills or traditional knowledge with our group. Honorariums will be provided.
If you are a venue owner that would like to host our program or an organization that would like to partner with us, we are looking for safe spaces where we can learn, laugh and grow together.
We are currently building a team of passionate volunteers who strive to make our community a more welcoming place. Volunteer applications can be found on our website. To stay up-to-date with our events, Global Friends can be found on Facebook (globalfriends705) and Instagram (global.friends).
If you would like to be involved or would like to learn more, you can find us online and our project coordinator can be reached at simone.mitchell@saultcareercentre.ca for further inquiries.
